A silly little blog for me to drop the excrement of my mind.

The internet is a treasure trove of written material.  With the increased penetration of broadband internet service, video and audio are now gaining a significant foothold.  However, written communication remains the real backbone of the internet.

This certainly has its share of disadvantages.  It can, at times, be difficult to pick up on sarcasm, when someone is joking or not, and other facets of communication that become much more evident when the actual words are coupled with body language and tonal inflections.  Miscommunication occurs on a pretty regular basis due to those missing cues.

However, it also offers a distinct advantage.  Being able to read someone's thoughts can offer us the opportunity to sit back and simply read what was written.  It gives us a chance to really attempt to comprehend what is before us.  Through the writer's use of language, scope and tone, we can really come to an understanding of what they were trying to say.  No visual cues to distract, no vocal inflections to prejudice us.  Just pure reading comprehension.

So why is it so dang hard?

Seriously, I am just about fed up with it.  Reading comprehension is taught to us from the day we start school.  It goes hand in hand with listening comprehension.  Listen to and follow directions.  Gah, I think we heard that about thirteen thousand times a day in Kindergarten.  So you would think it would have sunk in, no?

Apparently, for some people, it has not.  I am guilty of it at times as well.  We rush into an article, a news story, a forum post, or email armed to the teeth with preconceived notions of what the author is going to say, what spin they are going to put on a particular topic.

And the next thing you know, we didn't even bother to actually read what was written.

Few things set me off like this.  I know I can miscommunicate at times.  But, to be arrogant, I think that (thanks to many years of learning and teaching how to write) most of the time I make myself pretty clear.  Sure, I have my own writing voice, everyone does, but I don't think it obfuscates my point.

So when I can tell someone didn't even bother to read what I wrote, and just replied to what they wanted me to have written, well, I just want to reach through the electric ether and smack the hell out of them.

I wanted to write a smart ass comment that had nothing to do with your article only using the title as a guide but I'm too tired to be that clever this morning. So who do you want to reach out through the electronic ether and smack the hell out of? I want names. Is it me? I admit that occassionally I will skim and article but I don't usually comment unless I have read it.

Also I will admit that there are some writers that I'm left going huh? after reading their articles but I've never thought that I just didn't get it with any of your articles.

I would comment, but I didn't understand it.

That's a big pet peeve of mine,  that and when they take opinions personally that weren't intended that way, or are selfish and don't comment on my article, just their own life,  or the very worse which I think is getting emotional ( I do this one too ) and not thinking through their response.

I loved your second paragraph,  that's so accurate about miscommunication.  I recently had an exchange with a blogger that couldn't get past the emotions to hear what I was trying to communicate and refused to examine the issue,  that was really poor communication.

No worries Locamama.  It ain't you.

I think we all do that at times.  But I agree, it can really make things worse.

I have written one, no 2 of these in the past.  And yet people still do it.  I know at times my comments can be obtuse (when trying to be funny or sarcastic), but it does gall me when people take what I say and add their own spin to it.

If I was one of the offenders, I will smack me for you as I hate it as well.

No Doc, it wasn't you.  I think there have been some times we didn't understand each other initially, but I think we could tell that and clarified.  This was just blatantly ignoring what I was writing in favor of pushing an agenda.

Sometimes I like the fact that I have no idea what is going on (despite having read your blog, I promise)!

I apparently lost someone I thought was a friend over reading comprehension.

No matter. If they are so petty as to use that as an excuse to divide, I figure they were looking for a reason anyway (shrug).

!  ModMan, you crack me up.  Bother hugs right back at you man.

Shades: I like that as well.  Sometimes I just have to vent, but like to keep a low enough profile that my rants can be slightly cryptic.  Adds to the mystery.

I find that pretty sad, but so true.  Too often we will just seek for reasons to get pissed.  There is only so much you can do I suppose.
