A silly little blog for me to drop the excrement of my mind.
-or- the suit vs. the slacker
Published on May 23, 2006 By BlueDev In OS Wars
By now, I am sure most of us have seen the new round of Mac vs. PC commercials. You know, the one with the middle age, sort of uptight looking, fuddy-duddy dude in a suit representing a PC, and the young, hip, cool, laid-back dude in old jeans and a T-shirt representing a Mac.

I have seen a couple of variations, but they all focus on the same thing. They all are trying to convey the same message: Macs are just cool and "work", whereas PCs are out of touch, laborious and problematic. Of course, I find it odd that so much of the advertising lately is on the hardware (considering I am typing this entry on my Windows laptop with Intel Core Duo processors, an pretty nice ATI graphics card, more RAM than a Mac Book and a larger HD than a Mac Book, at easily a few hundred dollars lower cost).

Nevertheless, I am not a Mac hater. In fact, I fully anticipate owning a Mac someday, when I can afford to have one IN ADDITION to my Windows computers. But I have to admit, I really don't care for these new ads. They just seem like such a faulty use of details, that honestly, I think they are embarrassing. In that spirit I share the following (sorry, can't paste the image myself as it is not mine and I don't have permission to be pasting it):

An alternative comparison between PC dude and Mac dude.

I found this quite entertaining.

Does that mean you will have to hate yourself?

No more than usual but I am concerned that typing a forum post on a Mac might bring out the worst in me when commenting on PC's.....and visa versa.

Right now the worst only comes out when I think of my first wife...

I have tried (successfully) not to think of your first wife (for the same reasons) for years. Thanks to you and your last post . . . I have failed.

Come on! This is like the fax machine makers would to say "e-mail? Never mind!! Fax macine is better!!!".
There is a reality: You could to have a super PC with 4 GB Ram... 8 processors, 512 Mb Video Ram... but the OS will be the same Windows XP. It don't come with any photo editor, video camera incorporated, music editor software, Dock bar, wheather gadget and DVD editor software.
I know, you can install its then... but is not the same that to have them incorporated in the system.

I use both OS but on Mac I never have a blue screen neither any program crash. Casualities?

I've never seen an 'honest' commercial, so what's the point to all this?

I think they are quite funny. To be funny there has to be some element of truth to twist.

Restarts - Ok, so the Windows Kernel can not load/unload sections at a time. It's monolithic. So is Linux. Mach is a microkernel. Wow, that just means so little. Windows only needs restarting when its kernel crashes. Here's the problem - ignorant users who assume a program locking up makes for a mandatory restart. The pinwheel-of-death is an instance of Mac's "crashing." Just because a Mac has the equivalent of xkill means nothing. End Process works in Windows. Non-Point.

I went back a bit to reply--I would have to agree that End Process (and End Task) works pretty good in XP. I am one of those few graphic designers on a PC and not ashamed to admit it. It was pretty much an economic decision for me. A fairly decently equipped Windows box was just plain cheaper than a Mac, and my wife can load all her non-Mac software, too. Didn't really like Windows 98- it did seem fairly crash-prone, especially when running multiple memory-eating apps. However, I'd have to say that XP is a huge improvement...my system RARELY crashes. The Mac-guy vs. PC-guy commercials would have you believe that PCs crash on a regular basis. Bunk. Don't load crap on your system, install good Anti-virus software and keep it up to date, do all the "routine maintenence" like optimizing, registry cleaning, etc. and the system pretty much will hum right along.

Microsoft may well be stepping in the right direction with Vista. The "Vista Ultimate" SKU will include:

- Media Center code

- Tablet PC code

- DVD editing and burning software

- Networking configuration options in one panel

- Code that will read the hardware and scale the OS to optimize performance for the given machine

- A driver model that makes use of the 3D capabilities of current video adapters

- Anti-spyware in Windows Defender, and at least a measureable improvement in security focus and features when connected to the web.

- A search feature that essentially eliminates the need to create structured folders manually, except for individuals who want to create the structured folders.

- And much more.

It would seem that if the performance is good, the PC platform running Vista may be quite easy to manage and include a lot of the benefits that the Mac currently offers in multi-media.

I for one look forward to reviewing in about a year, the reality vs. the current discussions, to see if one can indeed say that the PC platform has been improved by Microsoft's new OS.

I think the one about viruses is hilarious. I downloaded it and play it occasionally for a laugh.
Of course it's all rubbish. It's marketing. But this tidbit...
'I think I gotta crash' (falls over backward).

But if MS did that they would have even more people screaming about them monopolizing the market, more anti-trust BS, etc.

Heck, this is the OS that has to ship versions that don't come with a media player at all. Just try to imagine the anti-MS outrage if they included all that. Evil, evil MS.

lolapoa ...it is clear that #76 WAS a copy/paste extract of another's article.

If you wish to do this you are obliged to credit the source....otherwise it is plagiarism.

Now, now, take a shot or two of Pethadine, a few Valium, a coupla Prozac and settle down.

Thing is, if you suffer the same panic attacks; temper tantrums; hot 'n cold flushes; fainting spells; heart palpitations; loss of appetite; stomach disorders and the mothers of all scariest nightmares as me, keep a bottle of Chloroform handy...works wonders when conventional treatments fail.

Now back to investigating Macs! After checking out the Apple/Mac (Australia) website, I see that I can get a duo core 2.8 Intel based Mac with the newest Leopard OS and a 20" LCD for $2649 (Aus) Considering that I've already spent that much and more on my Windows based PC, and the Mac comes out of the box with a lot of essential applications, software, it's not such a bad deal. Hopefully it's on the cards in about 12 months.

Before you buy it though Starkers you should check you don't qualify at all for the educational discount. It's not a lot, but it'll take a few hundred off the shelf price. It reduced my 12" ibook from 1800 bucks to a more competitive 1500, so it's definitely worth a shot.

But if MS did that they would have even more people screaming about them monopolizing the market, more anti-trust BS, etc.

True. I'd be all for Microsoft doing it though. Since I bought a Mac I care a lot less about the whole anti-trust deal. I know that if Microsoft goes too far I can switch to a Mac permanently. It'll be sad to leave 95% of the world's games behind but I'd live.

I'd much rather have all the programs I'd use regularly already installed and, most importantly, designed to work together smoothly, than have an empty OS that I have to spend hundreds of dollars on filling up with programs that'll probably try to kill each other.
