A silly little blog for me to drop the excrement of my mind.

Years ago I wrote a blog about Audioscrobbler.  It went so completely unnoticed that I am not even going to bother digging it up.  But, with all the advancements in the idea and the site, I just had to come and share again.  Plus, perhaps some of you will sign up and add me as a friend.  I only have one so far.

To make things nice and easy, Last.fm is a website that allows you to share your musical tastes with the world.  You, the user, create an account, download the Last.fm software, log in with your account, and then just listen to music.  The software takes the track info, uploads it to your Last.fm page and folks from around the world can see what you are into.

Want to know what I've been listening to lately?  No problem, just head over here and take a peak.  You can see my all time top artists, songs, my weekly artists and even what I have listened to most recently.  In fact, here it is:

But sharing what you are listening to isn't all it is.  It also is a customizable internet radio.  You can head over, log in and play radio that might suit your tastes.  If it doesn't, just ban the song.  Love it?  Say so and you will get more of that.  It is really a great way to find new music.

Of course, the big concern is privacy.  Oooooh, Big Brother might find out you are listening to "illegal" mp3s!  Nope.  All the software does is look at the artist/album/title info of the tag.  It doesn't matter what format, if it is DRM'ed, on a CD, nothing.  It doesn't share anything more.

Honestly, I think it is pretty cool.  It is fun to see what my listening habits are as well.  So head over and check it out!

Last.fm is a great way to track your listening habits, I do agree!  I use it just to see who my faves are from week to week.  I've had it for about 8 months now, and so far its worked well!  I'm really impressed by the fact that I've used three different media players on my computer since then, and I've been able to use the audioscrobbler plugin for each one, no problems.  No gaps in my habits!

And yes... the privacy is handy... I'd rather not have my music-listening policed.

Sweet!  Great to see someone else who uses it.  I started using it way back in the day it was Audioscrobbler.  Haven't used it for a while because one of the plugins for foobar2000 was buggy (at least on my system).  But the current version works like a charm, and the last.fm software is actually really nice.

I love how it allows you to tag songs, get a bio and some information on the artists, etc.

Hey, I've been mucking around with Pandora, which sort of does the same thing. I'll have to check this out when I get home, though, as I can't access the site from work. But thanks for the heads up, mate.

BTW, I still haven't responded to you and your brother's music of 2006 article yet. To be quite honest, I only know a few of the names on your list, but only because I've seen them mentioned in magazines. I will get around to reading the whole article, though. Just been busy...

I actually really like Pandora as well.  It works wonderfully.  I do like the sort of social networking aspect of last.fm.  I also like seeing my listening habits.  There are bands I had no idea I listened to so much.
