A silly little blog for me to drop the excrement of my mind.
-or- WOW!
Published on May 24, 2004 By BlueDev In Misc
I just woke up from a little nap after my first ~30 hour day of call on the Labor and Delivery unit at the hospital. It is a weird experience to be there that long. I was rounding on patients this morning and had to keep reminding myself to talk to them about their delivery yesterday, even though it was all one big day to me.

And, yep, I did catch, all by myself, two little babies while I was there.

I also got to be part of three C-sections and observe a couple other, more complicated deliveries. It is something amazing to be the first one to have your hands on and hold a new little life. I was very fortunate in that the two I delivered were very excited and very much looking forward to their little ones. The joy in the room was palpable, and to see the smiles on the parents is an incomparable experience. I have mentioned a couple times that being in medical school can be a very humbling experience. And I was reminded of that again in the past couple of days as I was so openly and warmly included into this special moment of their lives.

I am exhausted, but energized at the same time. Oh, and I didn't drop either one!

"Wow" is right, Dev!  How cool!!

Delivering an infant is on my list of 'things to do before I die'...I can only imagine the joy.

Thanks dharma! It was very, very cool. A sort of rush that I really can't explain. It certainly wasn't the same as when my little girls were born, but I didn't catch either of them. I was up helping my wife. This was rewarding, just a different way. I hope you can have the experience, it is unforgettable.

Dusk411-Thanks for your kind words. It was a blast!

When my Jake was born, the doctor asked if I'd allow the med tech. to deliver him...he wanted to make sure that they knew how to catch in case he couldn't make it there in time, and thought I'd be the kind of person to agree to it.  Of course I said yes.....the tech was crying harder than Dave when Jake came out and started squirming and yelling.  It was her first delivery...and something she said she'd never forget.

What an awesome way to make a living!  You will be a part of those families'  lives forever.

Best wishes.

dharma, I know I didn't realize how much that would mean to me, and I doubt she did either. It really means a lot to be allowed to take part of that.

Jill, thanks for the kind words and thoughts. I know I will never forget the people who delivered out two girls.
