A silly little blog for me to drop the excrement of my mind.
-or- ways to get a lot for a little

I am a total tech junky. That doesn't mean I know a lot really, but I love computers, technology, new gadgets and new programs. At times I will browse software sites and look for new programs, read up on them, and maybe give them a try. Today I found some real gems that I just had to share.

All of the following programs can either be downloaded or linked to from the site Klitetools. There are many sections, all freeware. In some instances there are newer, shareware or commercial versions of the software, but archived links to the free versions are still available. Here is a rundown of the ones I found to be keepers.

FreeRAM XP Pro: What can I say. I am RAM conscious. I don't really have a shortage (though I wouldn't mind more than my current 512 megs in my laptop), but I like to make sure that as much is free as possible. Now, that doesn't mean I boot up with the most plain, boring desktop around. Rather, I want to run the programs I want (eg, Windowblinds, ObjectDock +, Cursor XP, IconPackager, Desktop X or widgets) and still have as much free memory as possible. I have Tune Up Utilities 2004, a great program that includes a RAM optimizer. But I just never found that to be that effective. So I gave FreeRAM XP Pro a try. It is amazing. With one click of a button it will automatically free up any possible RAM. Tune Up Utilities will do the same, but it only will free up a predetermined amount of RAM by moving extra to the virtual memory. This can lead to some slowdowns afterwards, and hence was never an acceptable option to me. But FreeRAM, while it can free up as much as you tell it to, also has a smart free up system that just gets unneccessarily used RAM available again. And it does it fast. You can configure it to automatically free up wasted RAM at any time interval you want. It also monitors system performance and can make necessary tweaks when things get bogged down. I am sold. This program rocks.

DustBuster: This is another great program that finds temp files, unneccessary files, and junk files and gets rid of them. It does not interfere with system files or installed programs. Very powerful tool for freeing up space. Being OCD as I am I run the disk cleanup in Tune Up Utilites and then XP's own disc cleaner daily. DustBuster still cleared up >800 megs when I ran it this morning.

PhotoFiltre: A great little program for giving your images cool effects. Sure, programs like Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro can do all these as well, but cost a LOT more and often require multiple steps or finding pre-made scripts to do these effects. Fun to play with, very fast, and easy as can be to use, PhotoFiltre has found a permanent place on my hard drive along side of Paint Shop Pro.

There are also a number of other temp file/internet cache such tools there as well. Don't be afraid to go to the site and check these out. There are some great, free programs out there.

Hmm good programs. Thanks.

A note that appears on the dowload site regarding FreeRAM XP Pro:

Note: WinXP has a very state-of-the-art memory management, and you won't notice any performance improvement when using memory optimizers. All such optimizers/boosters available on the market - both freeware and trialware - are useless for XP and others to follow. Such programs are recommended for 95/98Larry Kuperman only.

This is NOT directed toward you BlueDev (thank you for your post) but if such is the acknowledged case, then I find the name of this product deceptive. Why name something "XP Pro" if it does little or nothing for Windows XP systems?

Interesting, I hadn't noticed that. Thanks for pointing that out. I had just downloaded it directly from the Klitetools site. I did do a little more hunting around on the FreeRAM XP Pro site and found the following (directly from the site):

But wait, I thought these "RAM freeing programs" were useless, especially on Windows XP, and worse, could even slow down my computer!

We realized this was a problem too, in earlier versions of FreeRAM XP Pro and with the vast majority of other RAM freeing/memory utility programs out there. That's why we designed the AutoFree memory optimization option, which is unique to FreeRAM XP Pro. It frees up enough RAM to flush out uncleared and leftover data from RAM, enabling your computer to respond quickly to loading new applications and performing other tasks which require RAM (which spans most or almost all of typical computer usage), but it won't try to allocate so much memory that much of it gets written to the hard drive, which really can slow down performance. AutoFree computes the optimal amount of RAM to free according to your total installed RAM, available RAM, current swap file size, and other dynamic system metrics. And one of the best parts about FreeRAM XP Pro is the customizability--if you don't like AutoFree, you can set your own amount to free, along with a slew of other configurable options to suit your tastes and computing environs, and such options can be called up easily with just a few keystrokes (i.e., a Windows shortcut) or by right-clicking on the system tray icon.

Finally, we'd like to say that Windows XP is, undoubtedly, a step up above Windows 95 and 98 in terms of memory management, and that FreeRAM XP Pro will most likely not, of course, do "miracles" for your computer (although some users have reported improvements close to that level). Actual results will vary according to your own computer, as can be expected. But we think that in almost all cases, whether your computer is running 32 MB or 1024 MB of RAM, FreeRAM XP Pro's ease of use, RAM-freeing effectiveness, extensive features, AutoFree functionality, and comprehensive data reporting will enhance your computing experience in, most likely, more ways than one. And since FreeRAM XP Pro is completely free (and we mean completely--not something you find often these days!), you really have nothing to lose.

So, it sounds like it may be good for you if you are running XP, but not nearly as dramatic as 95 or 98. I haven't had any problems with it today, it has been behaving nicely, and does seem to really make a good difference when I have lots of programs open. There is a mention about some issues with the tray icon and SP2, but I haven't been having any problems. Does seem silly to put XP in the name though. Thanks again for the heads up!

And thank YOU for the reply! Flushing the RAM without requiring a reboot sounds like a valuable feature.

Thanks for the post, by the way. (Had I forgotten to say that earlier?)

I think I can use that FreeRAM pro. Thanks for the info.

Hah, no, you had said it, but thanks for saying it again. Very kind of you.

Ravenblack, I have been really pleased with it. And what I really like the most about it is it continues to free up RAM as it runs. With it on, and no change in the number or types of programs I was using (which was considerable) I went from about 256 megs free up to 310 after it ran for about an hour.

XX--No problem. Hope you find something that is useful!

Whats Wrong with our Goverment?
You would think by now that someone that makes a quarter mil a year would be smart enough to see that politics without ethics DON"T work. Where do they get the ethics? Obviously the generation now living and holding offices in Washington, were not taught or else feel it's not an important issue any longer to have characture. I have not seen in this country for 20 years now a president worth his salt. Like Merle Haggard sang a few years back," We're headed down hill, like a snowball headed for hell." The sooner society realizes this FACT, the sooner someone will either stand-up and be counted or we will continue on down the hill untill there is only a trickle of water soaking into the sand. Then the END will come!

Sorry, BlueDev, but I can't help myself. I deserve any trollings I get for this...

Did you learn values instead of proper spelling? How about posting replies on the correct thread? It is a FACT that you don't value such things. I appreciate the well thought out post about fabulous freeware in your well written, properly spell/grammar checked post. Since off topic quotes are your thing, I'd like to paraphrase an Adam Sandler movie. "Thank you. We are all now dumber for having read that."

@ chiprj...

I've been using Freeram XP Pro for at least the last few months, (on win xp) and find it to be very useful. I have 2 machines, win98 SE and my Xp system.

It does work best on the 98SE, but I do get very noticable results on XP too.

Definitely a 'keeper' ....imho.

Glad to know I am not the only one. It has been performing great for me and I continue to use it on a daily basis. Really helps keep things running nicely.

Hey thanks! I like checking out programs too. But, it's nicer when someone else checks em out first and let's you know wether they are worth trying.

Hey, no problem NaturallyPoetic. I have become much more cautious these days when it comes to the things I will download and install, but I still enjoy playing around. I have found some more goodies, so keep your eyes out for FFF Redux!
