-or- yes, I am still a child
I have already admitted to being a geek. I recognize that and embrace it.
But I have another confession to make. I am also just a little boy. Deep down inside of me I still think and act like a little boy. Sometimes it drives my wife nuts (I don't blame her), but sometimes it really helps. And with our first little boy coming early next year, I will still be able to identify.
See, I love explosions (and still can make a mean, mean explosion sound effect), playing with cars, playing video games. I find burps to be great forms of humor, and farts can be pretty funny as well. I like well written and drawn comic books. I also love cartoons and super heroes. Which explains, in part, why I am so excited to see "The Incredibles".
I don't go see a lot of movies. They are expensive (but I do use my student discount), many are filled with crap I just don't feel like paying to see, others just plain suck, and then there is the issue of getting a babysitter. My wife and I have no desire to pay for a babysitter so we can go watch a mediocre movie. But when one comes out that I want to see I get pretty excited. And "The Incredibles" fits this bill. I have been chuckling every time I see anything about it since the very first trailer I saw.
So this morning I have to 'run' around the net, checking out the reviews. They look good. Really good.
I really have enjoyed the previous Pixar offerings. "A Bug's Life" is probably my least favorite, and I still enjoy that movie. Since "Finding Nemo" has become our youngest daughter's favorite film, I have truly come to appreciate just how good a movie it is. I have it practically memorized, but still find myself watching it with her, and not being bored.
And now they have combined super heroes with top notch animation. How could I not love it? I see other undercurrents in the story though. I see hints of the desire for each of us to retain part of our childhood as we grow up. Like Mr. Incredible, sneaking out to fight crime, I still sneak 'neath the gaze of my peers, playing computer games, playing with toys (my kid's of course), watching silly cartoons (Sponge Bob! Hoorah!), and finding joy in some of the more simple facets of life that society seems to think we should leave behind as we age.
Not me. I'll hang on to my childhood, thanks. And I will enjoy it, just like I will enjoy watching "The Incredibles" (hopefully tonight if the sitter doesn't flake on us!).
