A silly little blog for me to drop the excrement of my mind.
-or- a fantastic idea

I recently received via email my issue of the Bioware newsletter. Inside was a pretty big announcement.

Bioware is releasing some new modules for Neverwinter Nights. Here is the catch. They are charging for them.

Between $5-$8 US dollars for these additional modules is the price. And some gamers are up in arms over this. As far as I can remember, Neverwinter Nights wasn't really focusing on the SP aspect of CRPG gaming. Sure, they included a SP campaign in the original package, and extended that through 2 expansion packs. But I always got the impression that Neverwinter Nights was more about the Aurora tool-set.

This powerful tool-set made it relatively easy for folks to jump in and start creating their own games. I know people who have weekly NWN gaming sessions with a dedicated group of players. They play it in a manner similar to pen and paper gaming, with a dungeon master and persistent characters. And then there are all the fan made modules, downloadable addons to the game that anyone can make, upload and share with others.

And these modules have always been free. Which is why some gamers are seeing red about these new modules.

I think they are stupid.

Bioware has made a brilliant move in my mind. They are spending the time to make premium modules, that include cut-scenes, voice acting, and solid stories and dialog, and then just asking folks to pay a little bit for them. At least I think it is a little bit. I am by no means well to do, so that statement is coming from a pretty stingy grad student, not someone out in the workplace making lots of dough. $5-$8 US dollars for 5-10 hours of quality PC gaming sounds like a fair deal to me. We willingly pay that much or more for a 90 -120 min movie that we would have to pay for again if we wanted to watch it again. Scores of people payed $55 for DOOM 3 (which I have heard from many sources can be reasonably completed in 20 hours), paying more than $2 per hour of gameplay.

And many of these same people are whining about these modules. Just another example of the bane of electronic distribution (another article I plan on writing).

I hope it catches on. I would love to see some of my favorite games instilled with new life with additional campaigns, professionally done with good sounds, voices, and cut-scenes, that I could download for $5-10. I see this as a huge advantage that PC games have over console games. Instead of pumping out a game, only to dump it and then pump out another, developers could extend the life of some of their most popular games with these premium addons.

I love the idea. Bravo Bioware.

Bioware is one of the few companies that I buy games from no-questions-asked. Everything they've touched has been pure gold. These modules are a great way to revive the aging NWN platform. I bet in a few months we'll start to see anthology packs on store shelves boxing up all the latest modules for sale.

If you think this is cool, evidently Valve is looking to release episodic content via Steam for Half Life 2 eventually (it's in the Final Hours of Half-Life 2 article on Gamespot).

Thanks for the great comments, both of you.

Zoomba--I agree. Bioware is a solid company that has demonstrated time and again that they are capable and talented. Also, while there are parts of Steam that I think suck, I like the idea and think it is the future of PC gaming (similar to TGN).

Helix the II--I have a hard time playing through a game again for very similar reasons. I invest enough of myself in the game, the story, the characters, that once I am done I really am done. I think that, as long as they are done well, this could really be a boon to PC gaming. Thanks for your comments.

I feel like I'm just saying "me too" but I agree totally with what Zoomba and Helix wrote. I wonder if Bioware will ever release NWN 2 or just continue to release modules. Whatever they do, I'm usually interested. I've already completed the game (NWN) twice so any new modules (that get good ratings, or are made by Bioware) usually find their way onto my hard drive. If Bioware wants to charge for 'em, more power to them, I say.

Someone else is developing NWN 2 right now... Bioware has moved on to original properties for now.

If they pack it all into CDs and sell them in stores, I would buy them. If I paid for them, I would prefer them to be in solid form. I don't mind paying a little more for that.

The game is about 2-3 years old, having new stuff for it is always refreshing.

this is what got me to give NWN a new try....i rebought the game, buying the Platinum edition....I am enjoying it much more this time around (even though i haven't bought the premium modules).

I would like to try out the online gameplay with this game sometime.....at the moment, I have a lv. 4 Druid....

I need to get around to buying the rest of the game. I only have the original, not the expansions. I wish they would also release the EPs in a single package, but I suppose I will just have to get the Platinum edition.
