A silly little blog for me to drop the excrement of my mind.
Game on eh?

In what I can only imagine is a push to get players, Funcom has announced that their Sci-Fi MMORPG Anarchy Online will be free until January 1, 2006. The three expansion packs Alien Invasion, Shadowlands, and Notum Wars are not included, but can be added on for a price. The best part of the offer is that no credit card is required. If you elect to not put in any billing information your account will simply freeze on 1/1/06.

I haven't ever played an MMORPG simply because I don't have the time to play in order to make it worth the monthly subscription fee, but this looks like a pretty good deal to me. I have already signed up, will be using the nickname Jexxster (BlueDev was already taken) once I start playing. I haven't had a chance to give it a go yet, so I can't really tell you anything other than that, but this could be a fun chance for those who haven't played it before. It didn't score amazingly well, but a glance at reviews seem to show it getting pretty solidly in the high 70% low 80%. If anyone else already plays or signs up, let us know!

hmm, when I tried to register it told me they had made an error and not to panic. Too good to be true I guess

Odd, I was able to without any problem. When did you get the error? I just checked my email and there was the email from them, pretty clear about it being free for one year. Hope it works for you.

I got the error about ten seconds before posting that reply. I'll try again, but I thought it was funny

Sorry, I meant when in the registration process did you get that error. It is funny though.

Right off the bat, I hit the button for registering and it gave me that error, but it worked when I tried it again just now. hehe, now to wait for it to download so I can decide it isn't worth playing

With a year free, yeah, it is a rather tempting offer. I played it back in the open beta for a week or two, wasn't terrible impressive, but it had potential. Maybe I'll become addicted now and spend all my time in anarchy land

So... why would Bluedev be taken? To me it's a fairly out there name but maybe there's a reason why more than yourself would be using it perhaps.

To prove a point to my sister on her computer I agreed to set up an AIM account at home. I had to chose a screen name so I picked something from a story I'd written years ago: 700yearknight (ish... not giving my secrets away, precious...)

It was already taken. Frankly this boggled me. I ended up going with vapidotter (vapid otter - about my thirtieth pronoun-animal combination before I got one that wasn't taken). I'm still amazed at the scale of the internet and yet how similar a lot of our thinking is. I've been toying around with http://www.20Q.net recently and I think it's a good example of this. The real question is: if everybody used it would it become perfect, or become useless?

I picked it because I am a Duke grad student and our mascot is the Blue Devils. Probably some other college student picked it back in the game's heyday.

When I tried to sign up for an AIM nickname I ran into the same thing with Jexxster. I thought it was pretty unique, but it was already taken as well.
